In a nutshell, calling it plumber's tape is a description suitable for its use and application. It is used to create an airtight seal between joints and is also used to lubricate the joint connection to make the threading smoother and easier to disassemble. Plumbing tape, often called Teflon tape (polytetrafluoroethylene or PTFE), helps to obtain a tight seal at threaded pipe joints. Standard PTFE tape is mainly used for connections of water systems, whether drinkable or non-drinkable, as they are resistant to corrosion and acid.
The applications where standard PTFE tape works best are high-pressure lines and are best used with most chemicals. Often referred to as a plumber's best friend, Teflon tape or thread sealant is a simple but effective material found in traditional tool kits from all over the world. PTFE tape, often referred to as “plumber's tape” or “teflon tape”, is a professional strength adhesive tape used in a variety of applications, usually related to ducts or pipes. If you are familiar with the use of pipe joint compounds (pipe putty), you can replace them with plumbing tape in the same applications.
Having a roll of plumbing tape in your home toolbox can be a lifesaver if you have a small leak or drips where fixtures are connected to a water pipe. Plumbing tape is recommended for most threaded connections that do not have a built-in rubber seal. You should definitely never use plumbing tape (white or pink) on a gas system, you should not even try to operate on a gas system without a license, knowledge and experience. Teflon tape, also known as plumbing tape, is a polytetrafluoroethylene film tape (a word you won't have to remember) and something that is very important in a plumber's arsenal.
To further confuse matters, the term plumber's tape is often used to describe metal or plastic strips with holes, designed to support pipes. Some plumbers and other workers use both products in the same application, adding a thin layer of pipe joint compound over the thread seal tape to ensure a tight or airtight seal. Thread sealing tape (also known as PTFE tape, Teflon tape or plumbing tape) is a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film tape that is commonly used in pipes to seal pipe threads. Skilled plumbers advise using the right amount, not too much, not too little, even if it's easier said than done.
For example: in a water heater, the water supply connection is threaded and requires plumbing tape to create the seal. In the late 1960s, tape manufacturers used DuPont's Teflon as a fine powder and applied the powder to their own plumber's tape. Attach the end of the plumbing tape to the second thread of the pipe end and hold it in place with your finger or thumb. If you need to create a watertight joint, wrapping the end of a threaded fitting with plumbing tape will ensure a tight seal.
